“In addition to directly selling the BAIC BJ40 PLUS and BAIC X55II, PT JHL International Auto (PT JIO) and Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) have signed an assembly cooperation agreement with BAIC for operations in Indonesia. There’s also potential for full-scale production in Indonesia down the line. This could provide added value to the development of Indonesia’s automotive industry”, Bamsoet stated during the grand launch of BAIC Indonesia at the GIIAS 2024 event held at ICE BSD in Tangerang on Wednesday.
The entry of Chinese automakers like BAIC,
with their modern technology and more affordable prices,
is set to shake up Indonesia’s current and future automotive landscape

Bamsoet explained that the Indonesian automotive industry market remains highly accessible. One factor contributing to this is the significant support from the upper and middle classes. It’s estimated that the upper class has reached 3.1 million people. Meanwhile, the middle class stands at 53.6 million, with an additional 114.7 million individuals having the potential to join the middle-class ranks.

“The entry of Chinese automakers like BAIC, with their modern technology and more affordable prices, is set to shake up Indonesia’s current and future automotive landscape. BAIC, founded in 1958 as a state-owned enterprise, currently ranks as China’s fifth-largest automobile manufacturer. Interestingly, BAIC holds shares in Mercedes-Benz, and vice versa. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the automobiles they produce are technologically advanced and of high quality, reflecting modern standards”, Bamsoet explained.

He explained that the BAIC BJ40 PLUS is a 4 × 4 Off-road vehicle with a rugged, masculine design. The interior features a 12.3-inch LCD screen and a 10-inch instrument cluster display. It’s powered by a 2000cc turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, paired with an 8-speed transmission and four-wheel drive system. The engine puts out 221 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque.
“The BAIC X55II is a front-wheel-drive midsize SUV equipped with a MAGIC-CORE 4-cylinder, 16-valve, 1,500 cc DOHC turbocharged engine. It delivers 175 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. The automobile boasts a sleek and contemporary design, reminiscent of modern crossovers, and comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission”, Bamsoet concluded.
The meeting was attended by President Director JDI, John Salim; Chief
Operating Officer PT JDI, Dhani Yahya; Share Holder JDI, Aries
Marsudianto; Chairman GAIKINDO, Jongkie d. Sugiarto; and the CEO
of the Prestige Motorsport, Rudy Salim.
